(Asclepias tuberosa)

Also known as "Butterfly Weed", Pleurisy Root is another very valuable herb.

This herb has Expectorant properties, along with Diaphoretic, Antispasmodic, Diuretic, Nervine, Carminative & Tonic properties.

The part of the herb used is the root. Useage of the root of this herb can affect the Kidneys, Nerves & Lungs.

Preparation of Pleurisy Root are usually in the form of an Infusion, Decoction, Fluid Extract, Powder, or Tincture.

This herb was used in times of old for treating Pneumonia.

Pleurisy Root is effective against respiratory problems by reducing inflammation and assisting in gentle expectoration. It has been used in the treatment of bronchitis and other respiratory conditions. Since it also contains Diaphoretic (sweating) and Anti-spasmodic properties this makes it even more valuable for treating pneumonia. For pneumonia it is usually prepared as a hot decoction.

Pleurisy Root has also been used for treating hard, dry coughs.

This herb is also said to be good for children exhibiting mucus discharges and gastric problems with nervousness.

As an enema for bowel complaints, a tablespoon to a quart of water steeped for 25 minutes. This is used warm (but not hot!).

I have read that this herb is used for asthma when drank as a tea.

Butterfly Weed, or Pleurisy Root, is a Perennial which grows about 2' tall. It likes to grow in full sun, and is normally heat and drought resistant. Produces brillian orange flowers up to 4 1/2" across, all the way from June until the first frost.

Germination is in about 3 weeks when seeded at a temperature of about 65 to 70 degrees. Lightly cover the seeds.

This herb is a beautiful attraction to an herb garden, and also to a bird and bee garden as they love it's beautiful flowers.

The hard part is harvesting such a beautiful plant!
