(Foeniculum vulgare)

Fennel is more than just a culinary herb! This herb has Aromatic, Carminative, Antispasmodic, Mild Diuretic, & Mild Stimulant properties. It also has Galactagogue properties.

Use of the seed of this herb can affect the eyes, stomach, & nerves of the body.

Fennel seed has long been used for treating acid stomachs, gas, & colic. It was traditionally used a lot for childrens stomach ailments. Fennel increases the flow of mothers milk (galactagogue) and can also increase menstrual flow. The crushed seed is made into a tea and cooled and used as an eyewash for tired, aching eyes and minor eye infections.

The seeds are chewed to curb hunger and ease indigestion. There is said to be research that shows that Fennel helps repair the liver after alcohol damage, even though I could find no further reference to it.

Seed and Leaf Steams are said to be good for deep skin cleansing.

Fennel is also sometimes called "Finocchio"

. Fennel Oil is available and sometimes used to flavor bitter formulas and when used conservatively, as a muscle toning massage. HOWEVER, I did find reference that Fennel Oil should NOT be used by Epileptics or Young Children.
