Cloves (Caryophyllus aromaticus)

Most people do not realize all the wonderful benefits that can come from a Clove.

Cloves have many great properties such as: Carminataive, Aromatic, Stimulant, Antiseptic, Anti-emetic, & Anodyne.

Description of the properties:
Carminative: Herbs which contain volatile oils that expulse flatulence from the gastrointestinal tract.
Aromatic: Herbs which have an aromatic smell and a pungent taste agreeable to it.
Stimulant: Herbs which act as natural agents in aiding the functional duties of the body.
Antiseptic: Herbs which the stop bacterial growth.
Antimetic: Herbs which relieve sickness of the stomach and help the prevention of vomiting.
Anodyne: Herbs that lessen the excitability of nerves and nerve centers bringing pain relief.

Useage of the fruit of this herb can affect the stomach, the mouth, the intestines, & circulation.

This herb is usually prepared in the form of an Infusion, a Fluid Extract, an Oil, or as a Powder.

Cloves are not just for sticking in oranges at Christmas time for its lovely aroma.

Cloves are warming to the system. Combined with its stimulant properties, the fruit of this herb is valuable. Adding cloves to a "bitter" formula can help mask the taste and at the same time improve digestion. Its carminative properties helps with flatulence and spasms of the stomach. Because of cloves warming properties, it is a good herb for people who suffer with cold hands and feet.

A few drops of clove oil added to warm water will also help with a nauseated stomach.

Clove oil is an excellent toothache pain reliever. You must remember it is not a cure, just a pain reliever. It does have antiseptic properties, but if your tooth is abscessed you need to see a dentist. Diluted clove oil can be used on teething toddlers, however you must be sure not to get too much or use it too strong because it can have a tendency to numb the throat if much of the oil is swallowed. This could lead to gagging or choking. Just a bit on a q-tip should be adequate.

If you do not have clove oil or are not inclined to make your own, an adult can also suck on a clove, placing it over the problem gum area. Whole cloves can also be chewe for bad breath (like garlicy breath) but might be a bit numbing to the tongue! :-0

How to make clove oil

1 cup whole cloves
olive oil or any vegetable oil

Crockpot:
Place cloves in small crockpot and turn on the very lowest setting. Cover cloves with enough oil to cover them completely. Allow to steep on low for 10 hours, checking to be sure it does not burn. Allow to cool and then strain. Pour into sanitized amber colored glass bottles with tight fitting lids.

If you do not have a crockpot:
Place cloves in a small non aluminum sauce pan and cover with oil. Turn on very very low and simmer for several hours. Allow to cool and strain and bottle same as above.

Non heating method:
Place cloves in large sterilized glass canning jar. Cover completely with oil. Place in a sunny window for 3 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and bottle as above.

Potpourri Recipe With Cloves
Spicy Rose Potpourri

3 Cups fragrant rose petals
1 Whole Bay Leaf, crushed
2 Tablespoons Orange Peel
3/4 Cup Orris Root Chunks
1 Cinnamon Stick, broken into pieces
3 Tablespoons Grated Nutmeg
2 Tablespoons Whole cloves, crushed
2 Tablespoons freshly ground Allspice

Mix all these ingredients together in a tight sealing glass container.
Allow to sit for 4 weeks, shaking daily. When ready, diplay in pretty open glass bowls!

Tea Recipes Made With Cloves

Tea #1
1/2 Teaspoon Lavender FLowers
1 Teaspoon Chamomile FLowers
1/2 Teaspoon Elder FLowers
1 Whole Clove
2 cups just boiled water

Place all the above ingredients into your teapot and allow them to steep approx. 5 minutes.

Tea #2
1 Teaspoon Catnip (dried)
1/4 Teaspoon dried Caraway Seeds
1/2 Teaspoon Dried Licorice Root
1 Teaspoon Orange Peel, bruised
2 cups just boiled water

Place all the above ingredients into your teapot and allow them to steep approx. 5 minutes.
